Cold War Black Ops Multiplayer Maps Ranked

Multiplayer maps in Call of Duty are just as important as they have ever been. There are so many mixed comments from players saying that they either love the maps or that they’re just not good enough this year. With the launch of Season 1 came a couple of new maps but are they all they’re cracked up to be?

When I look back at all of the best COD titles such as the original Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 or Black Ops II, they all have one thing in common.

And that one thing is a really great set of playable multiplayer maps. You can tell a really good map for a subpar one from the simple fact that they often re-appear in the newer games, just like with the map included in season 1 of Cold War Black Ops ‘Raid’.

They aren’t listed in any particular order. Just pay close attention to the scores I give them out of ten. I’ll explain my reasoning and why I think it deserves the score. This article will probably be updated as more and more Cold War Black Ops Multiplayer Maps are released.

Armada

It’s said that the Armada map is based of the little known true to life CIA mission to steal a Russian nuclear submarine. Project Azorian was an operation to steal a sunken Russian sub from right under their noses.

Here’s a cool video explaining the operation, we’ll let you judge if you think the map is based on it or not, hit the link here to check it out.

The great thing about this multiplayer map is that there’s two versions. One for the 6v6 game mode and a larger version for 12v12. On the larger of the two you can use the zip-line to hop from ship to ship, it adds an extra layer of fun to this already great map.

Armada has something for every type of player, you can camp, snipe or run around guns blazing. If you’re going to camp there are some great places in the ships bridges. You can hold up there and lay a trap for any enemy that enters.

Sniping is great aswell. You can snipe across to the second bridge and pick players off from there. The ships bridge is also a great vantage point to defend the objectives in domination and hard point game modes.

If you do run around the map guns blazing, stay close to the walls. There is some good cover all over the map so you can shoot and scoot and stay well hidden. Make use of the shipping containers as bullets can’t penetrate the metal.

The only downside to this map is ‘spawn sniping’. The spawn spots are pretty obvious and you get some enemy players taking advantage of this, which can be extremely frustrating.

Cartel

Cold War Black Ops Multiplayer Maps Ranked

Cartel is a super fun black ops cold war map. You’ll find most of the action is focused around the center of the map, just in front of hangar 2. It’s interesting that most of the action on Cartel takes place outside the hangar as there are two other distinct areas of intense combat.

On one side of the map is a rocky river bed that has plenty of open spaces that will enable you to successfully utilize long-range weaponry. On the other hand though, there are also plenty of places within the rocks for low skill players to go prone and then pop up and kill you, so be careful!

Keep an ear out for enemy footsteps, you’ll hear the splashes in the water which will allow you to carefully plan your next move before you take on your foes.

The middle of the map contains a minimal amount of cover which is why grenades are so effective in this particular area. I think they should rename this part of the map ‘grenade alley’, it’s grenade hell to be honest, so if you have the Danger Close perk you’ll be able to get a few extra lucky kills just by throwing all of the stuns and frag grenades you have.

The bushes and copious amounts of foliage are good places to crawl through undetected. It’s quite easy to get through un-spotted, as the bushes don’t even rustle or move when you move through it. Again though, the bushes and foliage are prime targets for grenades and a quick burst of LMG fire to deny the space.

On the other side of the Cartel maps is the warehouse, well it’s actually a hangar. The hangar is perfect for engaging in an CQB (close-quarter battle). There’s plenty of cover, this allows you to pop up, take down your enemy quickly, and then get the hell out of dodge before the rest of the enemy team converge on your location.

Checkmate

Checkmate is a great map! - Cold War Black Ops Multiplayer Maps Ranked
Checkmate is a great map! – Cold War Black Ops Multiplayer Maps Ranked

Checkmate is a brand new multiplayer map featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It’s a medium-sized map designed for 6 vs 6 battles. Based in Berlin, Germany it’s designed as a training facility to practice a plane highjacking.

With some decent updates and patches Checkmate could, in time be a viable competitive play map. This is all depending on the placements of objectives specifically for competitive modes but it could be a little too ‘square’ for that. So only time will tell!

The map has some large open spaces with point to point cover. It also has lots of CQB areas, specifically the large plane in the middle. The plane doesn’t seem to have any major power position though, which is good. As an objective it’s fairly difficult to obtain and even harder to hold.

The action areas can be really chaotic but that makes it really good fun. It’s one of my favorites for sure. There is something for everyone. If you want to set up camp, there are a couple of good vantage points on both sides of the map. But, those camping spots do leave you vulnerable to a flanking pincer movement, so be sure to set up your defenses with a proximity or gas mine.

There are two other lanes for you to attack, there is plenty of cover through the two internal rooms. These rooms are perfect locations for placing your proximity mines or for hiding out and picking off enemies as they run past you. Don’t stay too long though, as you’ll get found out pretty quickly.

One thing I don’t like about this map is that your killstreaks can get stuck on the roof! So to prevent this you can aim your killstreaks for the door at the back. If you aim it just right you’ll be able to claim the killstreak without timing out for being outside of the game zone.

Crossroads

Cross Roads is ranked highly by competitive COD players
Cross Roads is ranked highly by competitive COD players

Crossroads is a big hit with the competitive players. We haven’t seen this map before, it’s brand new for Black Ops Cold war. This map is available in two different versions. Firstly, there’s a larger version for 12 v 12 and a medium sized version for 6 v 6, with a slightly different name, Crossroads Strike.

Crossroads has three distinct lanes with some added verticality and excellent cover points, this makes this map flow brilliantly. But, on the flip side of that coin it does feel very chaotic, particularly in the third lane. You’ll get players camping in each of the corners. You’ll kill one enemy and the camper in the other corner will pick you off with ease, so be cautious and check those corners.

I feel like Crossroads and more specifically the smaller 6 v 6 map should have it’s own 24/7 playlist on multiplayer. It’s chaotic for sure, but a bit less so than Nuketown, for example.

The downsides to this map are more apparent in the 12 v 12 offering. It’s full of snipers and I really do mean full of them, it seems a little boring in my opinion. The large open spaces are great for snipers but not much fun for the average gamer that isn’t very good with a long range rifle. There are far to many camping spots for the snipers to set up shop. It promotes camping and the only real effective strategy to combat the snipers is either to camp your self or find an armored vehicle to move around in.

Garrison

Garrison is up there with the top ranked black ops cold war maps.
Garrison is up there with the top ranked black ops cold war maps.

Garrison is a fierce map. It’s close-quarters battles on steriods. Players are normally seen to be taking advantage of the huge amounts of crawlspaces and trench path ways. The benefit of that is you are partially hidden from your enemies. And, if you fire from these locations you can force combat into a confined space which in turn, makes grenades super affective.

If you need to force enemies out of these rat runs you should fight fire with fire and use a more tactical approach. Pound those positions with your lethal grenades to force these enemies out into more open ares of the combat zone.

There aren’t many long sightlines. In fact they are few and far between on this map, snipers may want to come prepared with an alternative loadout that will suit CQB. If you’re not using a CQB weapon on this map, try to keep your distance from all corners and entryways, apart from (of course) the two massive openings used by the tank conveyor belt.

Don’t camp behind the Tank whilst playing Garrison.

The Pines

The Pines – Cold War Black Ops Multiplayer Maps Ranked

A season One release. The Pines is one of the best Call Of Duty maps in the current lineup. It’s a sprawling shopping mall with plenty of places to hide, attack and defend. There are also a lot of camping spots, which makes it perfect for those of you who want to get those cheap kills. So, be cautious.

The Pines is set at the eponymous Mall at the Pines in New Jersey, which was just about to have it’s grand opening two days after the events of the map’s story.

The shopping mall is over by soldiers working for Perseus leader Vikhor “Stitch” Kuzmin. They use the mall site to re manufacture Nova 6. It’s going to be used in vengeance against Russell Adler, Stitch lures Adler and his team to the mall, where they ambush them after they discover the vast supply of Nova 6 ready to be deployed.
