Joby Wavo Boom Arm Review

The podcast boom of 2020 is still far from over, with a continued rise in popularity, brands are looking for ways to capture a bit of the action. It’s good news for consumers, these audio / video tech brands are constantly innovating and launching new products.

Joby have done just that. Granted, there isn’t much in the way of innovation, but the Wavo Boom Arm is pretty good and is definitely one to consider if you’re thinking of starting a podcast.

I was sent the boom arm in exchange for a fair and honest review, so read on below to find out if it’s any good.

Joby Wavo Boom Arm Review

First up, my first impressions.

When the box arrived it was packaged in a boring outer shipping carton. But, upon ripping the outer box open, I was greeted with a gorgeous looking, white product box.

It’s got subtle JOBY branding at the top end of the rectangular box. The high-res product imagery on the box is pretty much actual size and honestly, it looks great.

It’s up there towards the top, of best looking boxes for a product I’ve ever reviewed on the blog. Now, I know what you’re thinking, a good box design doesn’t equal good performance. Having said that, it does give you a good indication that the company knows what they are doing.

They’ve put the time and effort into designing and making a good product box which helps capture a consumers attention, they’ve (hopefully) put just as much effort or more into developing the product itself.

Upon removing it from the box then, there’s quite a bit of plastic packaging, which was disappointing. The Wavo Boom Arm construction feels solid in the hand, so it’s definitely not needed.

One thing that is required is a zip tie / cable tie, to keep the boom arm from extending when you remove it from the box. But, everything else can be replaced with a more eco friendly option.

Build Quality & Design

At it’s core, the Joby Wavo Boom arm is a pretty simple product. It’s essentially a tool that helps you to position your mic and other devices, like a webcam or other camera for example, where you need them.

The actual boom arm itself, has been made with super high quality metal, that looks stunning in the matt black, finished with the red side strips.

I really like that your mic or accessory cable is concealed by red plastic slide-on strips. It’s a simple solution to cable management. I really like when a company does the simple things well. And those two red plastic slide on strips results in a really sleek, clean look.

It’s not only for looks, but the cable management will obviously help keep your cable from being damaged over time.

Performance

One thing that ensures the Wavo Boom arm stands above it’s competitors is compatibility. It’ll fit a vast array of microphones and other gear. It can accommodate different tech thanks to it’s mounting screw.

It’ll fit microphones such as the Genesis Radium, the Yeti Snowball and the Sandberg Streamer Kit. What ever mic you’ve got, it should fit.

What ever you decide to mount on the boom arm, it’ll need to weigh less then 1kg. That’s the max load the arm will take before it starts to droop. That’s really the only negative point with the JOBY offering; it could do with a stiffer spring.

Securing it to your desk is a breeze and isn’t overly complicated, it’s vice-like grip ensures it won’t fall off mid podcast.

I can’t help but think they could have included a rubber layer over the metal vice-grip, which could help to improve the acoustic properties of your mic setup.

Once you’ve mounted a device, it’s really easy to position it exactly where you want it. It’s got a fantastic amount of dexterity and maneuverability.

How Much & Where To Buy

Summary & Verdict

For the price, you can’t really go wrong. JOBY are renowned for making products with incredible quality. Which is what you’re getting with the Wavo. They’re the same guys that make the world renowned Gorilla Pod! So what did you expect!

Score: 10/10

Boom Arms are simple devices and the market is flooded with cheap, rubbish quality ones. So, do yourself a favor and buy something that’s going to last the lifetime of your project, even if it is slightly more expensive than your average non-branded, Chinese made arm.
