DLINK DCS-8627LH Outdoor Camera Review

Here’s my review for the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera! So there’s a high chance that if you’re reading this then you either own or rent your own home, so you’re probably one of the main bill payers. With this responsibility comes some worries that I imagine most people feel, namely home security.

As a homeowner myself I quite often think, what if someone did get in, how would I know? How would I find out who did it? And sometimes these questions keep me up at night. This is where today’s product comes in. The DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera is a great tool for home security.

When I was offered the chance to test out the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera I instantly jumped at it. I had already been looking into getting a camera for the front of my house so this was the perfect opportunity.

Obviously I did my research first as the UK has strict laws on data protection so the positioning of the camera was extremely important. If you are looking to get a DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera for yourself then I suggest doing your own research beforehand so you don’t have it set up illegally.

If you are looking to get yourself one of these cameras then you’ll be set back £154.98 on Amazon. I know what you’re probably thinking, “that’s a bit expensive” , to which I say, can you really put a price on your security.

Enough of this build up though, let’s get on to what you’re here for, my DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera review.

The footage is quite clear for a mid-range camera.

DLINK DCS-8627LH Outdoor Camera Review

The most important thing, at least I think, when getting a security camera for your house is image quality. There’s no point spending hundreds of pounds to have an image that looks ripped straight from a film from the early 1900s. In this regard the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera has near crisp quality image capturing. Having used it both inside and out to test both scenarios I know that the quality barely changes depending on location.

The great part about the image quality is that the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera comes with both a colour night vision mode, but also a powerful spotlight. This means that even when it is pitch black outside you won’t have to sacrifice quality by having the image in black and white. The spotlight activates automatically when motion is detected.

Still keeping on the subject of image quality, it’s not quite as good as those offerings by Unifi, such as the G3 Flex or the G3 Instant.

To view your footage from the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera you’ll need to download the mydlink app on your phone. This is easy enough to do, there is even a QR code on the instructions that you receive in the box to take you straight to the download page. After the app is downloaded there are clear on screen instructions on how to connect the device to the app. The DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera also comes with a small SD card port on it to increase any storage space for videos that need to be saved.

Once you have connected the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera to your app there are a few different features you can play with. This can be from setting up a safe zone within your camera, this will tell your camera where it needs to detect movement before it starts recording, you can also change the sensitivity of the detection system, this will let the camera decide how much movement it needs to detect before it starts recording, from a leaf floating past to multiple arm movements.

The app itself is relatively simple but effective, everything is easy to find and is well laid out for some of those who may be a little less computer literate than others.

So you might be asking, is it easy to set up? Well yes and no, the actual set up part was easy, but the preparation beforehand wasn’t. Because it is an outdoor camera there is a high chance that, like me, you’ll be attaching it to a brick wall. This means that you’ll have to drill holes into your wall, therefore if you don’t have a drill or the right drill bits you’re going to hit a hurdle here. If you do have all these things then everything else you need comes in the box, there are screws and wall plugs included to help with installation.

As for where you put it up, again you would need to check the law in your area but finding the perfect angle is easy enough. If you use the app at the same time you can see what the camera is seeing and cover as much of your premises that you need.

It's great in low light conditions too.

What’s included

So there are a few little extras that come in the box with the camera. Like I stated previously there are two screws and wall plugs to help with installation. There are two different plug attachments, one with three prongs and one with two. This means that you won’t need any adapters depending on where you live. The DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera also comes with zip ties to help with the cable management. Finally you get a nice sticker that says “protected by my dlink” so that people know there is a camera on your property.

How Much & Where To Buy

It’s for sale through most camera retailers but we found the best price available on Amazon. Hit the affiliate link here to check it out. It’s usually on offer for between $100 – $160.

DLINK DCS-8627LH Outdoor Camera Review Summary and Verdict

So whilst I love this product my only real issue is that the camera always has to be plugged in, meaning you have to figure out where your cables are going to go before you find somewhere to put the camera up.

Score 9/10

Like I said, home security is a major concern of mine and having the DLINK DCS-8627LH outdoor camera has really set my mind at ease. Because of this I’m giving it a 9/10, losing only one point because of the whole cable management situation.
